எழால் – Hawk

எழால்

This is a bird of prey with crest, probably a hawk. Hawks  dive down and attack other birds in flight. The word also means music (குறுந்தொகை 323, நற்றிணை 380). The cries of the this bird probably sounded like music – the calls are like that of flute music (Kurunthokai 151).   The male has a tuft on his head (Pathitruppathu 36). They fly with vultures (எருவை) and eat corpses (பதிற்றுப்பத்து 36).  The male bird is pretty with beautiful, fine spots that appear like sprinkled, small red tongue and big head (Akanānūru 103)

According to Dr. Salim Ali’s ‘The Book of Indian Birds’, this bird could be the Brown Lizard Hawk,  Crested Gos Hawk, Hodgson’s Hawk-eagle, Rufous Bellied Hawk-eagle or Crested Hawk-eagle. All these are raptors that dive down and attack other birds and they all have crests. All these birds are in southern India.
