A bird of prey that eats corpses (அகநானூறு 3). It could also be a kind of kite or eagle. The poets might be describing more than one kind of vulture. They describe the vulture as having a red ears  – which are actually fleshy lobes on both sides of its face (செஞ்செவி எருவை) in  in Akam 3, 51, 77, 111, 161, and 193.   The word எருவை also means reed (கொறுக்கச்சி)  in Sangam Tamil.  This bird might be the King Vulture (also called Black Vulture), according to Dr. Salim Ali’s book, ‘The Book of Indian Birds’. This is the only vulture that has a red head.

There is also the description of a vulture with a spotted neck – புள்ளி எருத்தின்  புன்புற எருவைப்  (பதிற்றுப்பத்து 36). This could be the White-backed Vulture which has a spotted neck.
